Muscular
dystrophy causes progressive weakening and wasting of the affected muscles in
the body. This leads to a significant disability in the patient. If left
untreated, muscular dystrophy can result in further complications that can pose
a risk to the life of the patient.
Muscular
dystrophy is a collective term used to describe a group of almost 30 genetic
diseases that lead to progressive muscle weakening Thus, preventing the patient
from performing voluntary movements with the affected muscles. There are nine major
types of muscular dystrophy, such as Duchene, Becker, Congenital, Distal,
Emery-Dreifuss, Limb-Girdle, Facioscapulohumeral, Myotonic and Oculopharyngeal.
Although,
conventional treatment has helped to cure the problem to some extent, but when combined with stem cell therapy for muscular dystrophy, the effectiveness of the
treatment has increased significantly.
What causes muscular dystrophy?
A
genetic mutation can occur through a wrong coding of the dystrophin gene which
is essential for the normal development of muscle tissues in the body. This
leads to birth defects leading to the weakening of muscles. These conditions
are collectively called muscular dystrophy.
When
the muscular cells fail to function, the muscles
begin to degenerate
Know about stem cell treatment for
muscular dystrophy
Stem cell treatment
for muscular dystrophy renders some relief. Stem cells are template cells, as
they not only regenerate into diverse cell types during development but are responsible for homeostatic maintenance and
repair too. Stem cells are able to develop into blood cells, bone cells, and
muscle tissues as well.
Stem cell therapy for muscular
dystrophy focuses on regeneration and repair of defective
muscle tissue cells. Stem cells mainly stimulate the increase of ‘satellite cells, type of muscle cells that help in therenewal of old muscle cells.
Apart
from treating muscular dystrophy, stem cell treatment can reduce chronic pain,
heal injuries, improve the functions of the body and help the patients to lead
a normal routine.
Stem
cell therapy generates effective results
in repairing damaged tissues that regress and immobilizes the human body.
